Site Fidelity

It’s always a thrill to see the first hummingbird of the year., or in this case the second of the year. A petite Calliope female just homed in on my feeder and took a long, long drink. There was not a bit of hesitation on her part. She knew what she wanted and she knew exactly where to find it! Both my FOY Calliope male and this female are banded birds, which illustrates the principle of Site Fidelity, the tendency of birds to return to their previous nesting and feeding grounds.
